As I wrapped gifts through the season I left off the name tags but wrapped each persons loot using individual wrapping paper rolls. My intent was to discourage the poking, prodding, shaking, and early guessing. The kids decided it might be fun not to put names on at all so I did not mentioned the color coding to them. I was hoping to watch and wait to see if they cracked the code.
Typically, we open presents one at a time so we can all see what is given, this year was no exception. We took turns opening the gifts and then guessing who it was for. Most of their gifts were clothes so it was pretty easy to figure out who it belonged to once it was opened. The Gameboy and Wii games were dubbed "family presents" although I had intended specific recipients. Eva opened a Zhu Zhu pet and promptly gave it to Grace and said, "This must be for Grace since I already have one. (which surprised me)"
I noticed that after about two rounds, Barak choose only his own presents to open. Then near the end of the pile, Gracie grabbed one and said, "I think this is mine." I asked her "Why do you think that is yours?" and she said, "Because it is the same color as the others." I told her, "Yes, you are right, it is yours." But then, after all the gifts had been opened, I asked if anyone had noticed that their gifts were all wrapped in the same paper and they all said that they did NOT notice. Granted, it was 5:30 AM and NONE of us are very awake at that time of day.
I'm calling this one for Gracie for verbalizing her process but I do find it all very interesting. I bet my kids wish they had a normal mother.
