Motivation

In a brief exchange between John and I today we discussed our kids chores habits. Sometimes we have overwhelming support, but most of the time, nil. John wondered why they don't spontaneously help out altruistically without some form of bribery. I wonder, what's wrong with the bribery? Why does Anyone do Anything that is not entertaining or pleasant? Two reasons: 1) money(reward), 2)its worse not to do it than it is to just do it(negative consequence). Eg... Why was I loading the dishwasher at the time of said discussion? Reason #2, Why was John caulking the windows, #2. As he walked away I wondered how this "gem" applied to my personal lack of motivations. Why do I procrastinate, work better under pressure, only at the last min? Reason #2. AH. How do I motivate my preschoolers since I can't be entertaining All The Time. Either bribery, or #2. This could be useful. So the third form of motivation would be altruistic. I won't say that it NEVER happens, just not as much. We do a lot of things just because we should- no reward, no negative consequence. But if we're hesitating, we make up a reason to do it. Bribery or Negative Consequence.
