pete and repeat

Parent teacher conferences were last night. We've been going nuts with the kids homework for the last couple weeks. (Isaac and Grace) have math, spelling, and reading homework EVEry night! Its ridiculous. Ive been composing a Roach Family Homework Policy in my brain because what we've been doing is Not working. Im mostly annoyed at the harrassment from the teachers. They email me, call me, and keep the kids in for recess. So, we thought we would discuss it at at PTC. Unfortunatly, the teacher was caught off guard and felt attacked (even though we have discussed this over the phone several times) and she got defensive and used a few harsh words. John did his very best not to evicerate the tiny woman. His self control is commendable. But, we did have to take it up with the principal (as if that will solve ANYthing).
My contention is: they are at school for 7 hours a day. They are at home for 4 hours a night before bedtime. IF they cant learn what they need to learn in 7 hours, then so be it! I WILL NOT spend 1 hour or more every night "reinforcing" what they learned at school that day. Leave school at school. Our home is full of distractions so what it takes 15min. to do in a learning environment (desk, tools, ect.) it takes 1 hour to do at home. NO. Im not going to do it. AAAANd stop telling me what to do. So, we told the teacher that we are OKAY with a 0 or U or Incomplete on the homework section of the report card- which was apparently a slap in the face because thats when she started to call us names.
Wait, didn't we do this last year?

I am with you on this--kids will benefit much more from quality family time than struggling through homework. I gave up on Drew's homework battle in grade school as well.

i feel your pain. but public school is public school. it seems no matter how many states we tried this in, it was ALWAYS the same battle! i hate it! at least with the homeschooling, i only battle the kids. in public school i battle the kids AND the school. it's such a hassle! and the school cares not about your family values or goals. they'll just hold the kids back and not let them move up with the rest of their grade. i had to fight the superintendent in vegas to avoid that. SO annoying!! i'm sorry you have to go through that!!! does this mean after all this hassle that john will be willing to support homeschooling? :P

Homeschooling is my obvious response. If you want something done right, do it yourself. But anytime I mention the thought, John goes into defense mode. All the 'quirks' of public school wont ever compare to the inevitable devastation of ME teaching the kids. Although I believe I can do it, he knows me too well.
