Insensitivity Fails

Shockingly!
This morning Sam and Nicole went in for their booster shots. Nicole began tormenting herself last night in anticipation. Which I did not have patience to address then. Hindsight. My attitude: "suck it up", "everyone has to do this", "nobody likes it", "its REally not a big deal" all apparently non comforting phrases. I missed the chance here to validate her feelings. In the end, all blew up in my face. Nicole, visibly nervous, protesting, shivering in her seat, let Sam take the first hit. He was stellar. Stoic. It was quick and practically painless. He smiled as he hopped of the table with encouraging words for Nicole. Then she started freaking out. "I don't like this, I dont want to do this, I dont care about school anymore, Im not ready, I dont like this, ect...." We fought her onto the table, tried to calm her down for a few min. but it was obvious she was just working herself up more. She was kicking the nurse, wrestling with me to get off the table. I finally had to hold her down while the nurse just shot her in the leg. She was totally tense. She screamed bloody murder. And then she was silent. (Turns out it wasnt that big a deal after all). What a nightmare! I am frustrated/embarrassed that she kicked the nurse and wrestled with me. What I have learned: I need more patience. I need to take more time understanding the kids feelings so these sort of outbursts dont have to happen. Sensitivity training. On The Job.

don't worry about the nurse or being embarassed as far as they are concerned. I give shots to kids all the time and have seen all kinds of reactions--Nicole's was not that out of line with the broad range of emotions (Sam's as well)

We are all learning as we go :)
